Cybersecurity Threats to Small-and-Medium-Sized Businesses (SMB)

With the burgeoning threat of ransomware and other cybersecurity attacks, companies are at greater risk than they have ever been. In 2017, ransomware attacks such as "WannaCry" and "NoPetya" dominated the news cycle for days at a time, and their devastating effects terrified business leaders the world over. SMBs are now in the crosshairs of these cybercriminals. According to an SEC report, SMB's have become principal targets as their cyber defenses are often less robust. According to a survey of small businesses by cybersecurity software provider Webroot, 96% of those companies surveyed feel that they are susceptible to cyber-threats while only 29% think they are ready to handle a cybersecurity incident.

Webroot goes on to say, "this study illustrates the general lack of preparedness for security around the globe. Small to medium-sized businesses face just as many threats as larger ones, but are often at a disadvantage because of their lack of resources. Given the recent spate of ransomware attacks, it is crucial for these companies to shore up their security and lean on the expertise of an MSP (managed service provider) for a solution to combat threats from multiple vectors.”

Webroot recommends maintaining good "cyber hygiene" to combat the growing risk of these threats, including:

  • Using antivirus and anti-malware and ensuring that these tools stay up-to-date.

  • Making sure all operating systems are patched in a timely manner.

  • Backing up all critical data and keeping it off-site.

  • Testing your backups once-per-quarter.

  • Having a strong network firewall and personal firewall on desktops.

  • Educating employees on how to recognize and avoid cyber attacks.

At NetAscendant, we agree wholeheartedly with Webroot's approach. Our Worry-Free IT Program checks every one of these boxes to ensure that our customers, the small-and-medium-sized businesses of the Permian Basin, are protected from these cyber threats while also providing them with unmatched service and support.
