The Tech Support Scam
Computer issues are frustrating by their very nature, especially if you are not a technical guru. Accordingly, the bad guys like to take advantage of this fact. They also like to take advantage of those who are less “tech-savvy”. With this said, always be on the lookout for “tech support scams”.
These scams can originate via a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft saying that “you have viruses on your system and we need to fix it”. Another way these originate is via “scareware” which might be a pop-up window appearing on your computer telling you that you are infected and asking you to call a number or run a scan.
If you think you are being targeted by these scammers, please give consideration to the following:
If you receive an unsolicited call about tech support, simply hang up.
Never give control of your computer to an unsolicited caller.
Never provide your credit card or provide financial information to an unsolicited caller.
Security pop-up warnings from legitimate tech companies will never ask you to call a phone number for assistance. If you see this, know that it is a scam. Never call these numbers.
If you think there is an issue with your computer, update your computer’s actual security software and perform a scan. Do not run a scan if prompted by pop-up windows.
If you need help fixing a computer or think you are being targeted by this scam, go to a trusted and knowledgeable friend/colleague first. They can steer you in the right direction.
Also, our elderly friends and family are often the victims of these scams. Be sure to share the above information with them.
